Speakers include Ph.D. candidates in their final quarter in the program, as well as invited guest speakers from around the world. Topics range from highly technical subjects to broader discussions on the direction of materials as a discipline, ethics in the work place, entrepreneurship, and more.
Policies for enrolled graduate students
MSE 795 is a one credit hour graduate-level course which is graded Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory. All enrolled MSE graduate students are required to register for MSE 795 during Autumn, Winter, and Spring Quarters (795 is not offered in Summer Quarter).
Further policies include:
- Students must petition the Graduate Studies Committee to waive the registration requirement. Petitions are to be approved prior to the start of the quarter in question.
- Students are responsible to attend MSE 795 ONLY when a talk is scheduled, and ONLY during established seminar times--i.e., Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 3:30-5:18. Presentations given outside of these times are not part of the 795 grading scheme. Please note the Seminar and Colloquium schedule for speaking dates. Announcements will be posted around the MSE department and e-mailed to MSE graduate students as a reminder. The schedule often changes, so please check it regularly.
- Students are to attend both the Ph.D. candidate presentations and the invited speakers' colloquia to receive credit for this course. Attendance will be taken during each presentation.
- A total of two unexcused absences are permitted per quarter. It is the student's responsibility to keep track of absences and to alert the MSE Graduate Studies Coordinator by e-mail prior to any scheduled absences (such as conferences, personal travel, etc.). Unplanned absences, such as illness, family emergencies, etc. may be excused (e-mail the MSE Graduate Studies Coordinator).
- Absences can NOT be made up by attending presentations outside the MSE 795 series.
