Influence of Microstructure on Deformation of the Parent Beta Phase in Beta Annealed Alpha+Beta Titanium Alloys

Abstract

Variation of the production Triplex beta annealing process for Ti-6Al-2Sn-2Zr-2Mo-2Cr-0.18 wt% Si was used to produce basketweave and colony microstructures that either contained or did not contain fine secondary alpha in the remaining ribs of the parent beta phase. Tensile specimens deformed at fixed amounts of strain ranging from the proportional limit to fracture provided materials that were investigated using OIM and TEM to determine the role of microstructure on the deformation characteristics of the parent beta phase. Coarse primary alpha microstructures, with no secondary alpha in the remaining ribs of the parent beta phase, were used to establish the baseline deformation behavior for subsequent comparison to that of finer, production like, primary alpha microstructures that contained secondary alpha in the remaining ribs of the parent beta phase. Results are interpreted relative to those found in prior deformation studies on individual crystals of alpha and beta titanium and single colony materials of alpha+beta titanium alloys.

Bio

Tom's professional experience includes time spent at the Materials Directorate at Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio, the Aircraft Engines business of General Electric in Evendale, Ohio and Kemet Electronics Inc. of Greenville, SC. During his career, Tom has held positions of varying responsibility, ranging from individual contributor on numerous research and development programs, to supervisor and team leader of research groups in materials processing and gas turbine engine airfoils, to Vice President of Product Development for tantalum and multi-layered ceramic capacitors. With his colleagues, Tom has authored over twenty publications in journal articles and conference proceedings and has been awarded eleven patents, with several additional applications under review. This past Valentines Day, Tom and Debi celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary. They are in the midst of raising their family of three children, Angela (who is now married) and Tommy and Taylor, who will continue to make special contributions to their household for another decade. Most free time is consumed by football, baseball, basketball, track, theatre, etc., with the kids.
