Experience

 

E. W. Collings was born in New Zealand, where he received undergraduate training in chemistry, mathematics, electrical engineering, and physics, which led to the degrees of B.Sc, M.Sc, and Ph.D. (1958) and subsequently D.Sc. (1972) in physics. He taught physics at the University of Wellington for about eight years before emigrating to the United States to join first the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia PA (1962-1966) and subsequently Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus OH (1966-1994). In 1995 Dr Collings joined Ohio State University's Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering as Research Scientist and later was elected to the post of Adjunct Professor. During his career in the U.S., Dr. Collings has conducted research on the metallurgical, physical, and superconductive properties of metals and alloys, chiefly those based on titanium, using the techniques of magnetic susceptibility, low-temperature specific heat, and electrical transport property measurement, and research on high-Tc superconductivity, using magnetization and other techniques. Based on this and the earlier work, he is the author of more than 200 scientific articles, books and videotapes, plus oral presentations etc., in the subject areas of: microwave electronics at 3 and 10 GHz, metal and alloy processing techniques including microgravity processing, heat transfer, surface science, scientific instrumentation, phase stability and phase equilibria, phase transformations, precipitation and aging in titanium alloys, liquid metal and alloy studies, solid-solution strengthening, electrical transport properties, electron paramagnetic resonance, magnetic properties of intermetallic compounds dilute alloys and austenitic stainless steels, the properties of rapidly quenched microcrystalline and amorphous alloys, and low-temperature and high-temperature superconductivity.

 

Dr Collings was a National Research Council of Canada Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Ottawa (1958-1960). He has been enrolled or is currently active in the following technical societies: American Physical Society, American Society for the Advancement of Science, New York Academy of Science, Materials Research Society, Metallurgical Society of AIME (now TMS), and ASM International.

Dr Collings was an Adjunct Professor of Physics, Ohio University, Athens, OH, and Visiting Professorial Fellow at the University of Wollongong, NSW, Australia. He was elected Deputy Chairman of the International R & D Center "Superconductivity" of the International Academy of Technological Sciences (Russia). He was also recently elected to membership of the International Academy of Electrotechnical Sciences (Russia).
