Degree requirements for MS & Ph.D.
Master's with thesis
The master's degree program is designed to give students the opportunity to gain additional knowledge and necessary skills in a specific area of Materials Science. A thesis option master's degree is made up of two primary aspects; academic course work and research used to support a written document. The MS with Thesis degree typically involves a two year committment on the part of the student.

Master's non-thesis
The master's degree program is designed to give students the opportunity to gain additional knowledge and necessary skills in a specific area of Materials Science. A non-thesis option master's primarily involves academic course work followed by the defense of a written document, such as critical literature review, during the final quarter of enrollment. The structured research component of the MS with Thesis is not present in the non-thesis option. The non-thesis master's typically requires 5-8 quarters to complete depending upon the student's schedule.
Students who successfully complete the Ph.D. Candidacy Examination may apply to receive a master's non-thesis degree provided that all course work requirements for the MS non-thesis have been met.

Ph.D.
The doctoral degree program provides students the opportunity to achieve a high level of scholarly competance and develop the capacity to contribute to the knowledge of their field. The Ph.D. degree typically involves a five year committment on the part of the student.
