General advising tips
Updated 10/26/06
Freshmen
Students in the FEH program should continue with the sequence as outlined by Dr. Freuler: Engineering H192, Physics 132, and the next Math course. If you wish to take another course, good possibilities would include a GEC (students with Honors status may take English 110 if they wish). You may take Chemistry 121 along with the FEH courses, but this set of classes will be very demanding.
Students not in FEH should continue with the Math sequence. If you took Engineering 181 in the autumn, you should take Engineering 183 in the winter. If you did not take Engineering 181 in the autumn, it is strongly recommended that you take it in the winter.
Students should also plan to take a science course, either Chemistry* or Physics, depending upon your placement in the sequence. A fourth course possibility would be Eng Graphics 167 or a GEC if you wish to take 18-20 hours. Non-honors students in Engineering are NOT permitted to take English 110 until the spring quarter.
Sophomores
Sophomores completing MSE 205 in the autumn should apply to the major before leaving for winter break. Students who have completed MSE 205 prior to winter should schedule MSE 282 and MSE 342. Other courses to consider are the Math, Physics, or Chemistry* sequences, and/or Mechanical Engineering 410/420.
Sophomores who will not have taken MSE 205 prior to the winter quarter should schedule it and MSE 282 and MSE 342 concurrently. Other courses to consider are the Math, Physics, or Chemistry sequence, and/or Mechanical Engineering 410/420.
Sophomores thinking about specializing in Biomaterials may take BIO 113.
Juniors
All juniors should take MSE 525, MSE 564, and MSE 581.02. Other course possibilities are a GEC, or any remaining requirements in the Math, Physics, Chemistry*, or Mechanical Engineering sequences.
Juniors planning to specialize in Biomaterials may take BIO 113.
Juniors who were unable to take MSE 282 or MSE 342 last winter must register for these classes, in addition to the MSE courses listed above.
At the end of this quarter, juniors are required to submit their specialization application form, signed by their faculty advisor. Please schedule a conference with your faculty advisor to discuss your choices.
Seniors
Senior students should now be following the curriculum of their chosen specialization, as set forth in the specialization bingo sheets. In addition, MSE 600 and MSE 695.02 should be scheduled.
Applications for Summer Quarter graduation are due in Hitchcock 122. Please fill out the application, and schedule an appointment with Megan to have it approved.
