Student profiles
Our students' interests are not solely focused on the study of materials. From marching band to rocket nozzles, art history to biomaterials; our students pursue both personal interests and a degree!
Carter E., time to tango
ÒMSE students don't just sit around with our noses in books trying to memorize the thermal expansion properties of Titanium!Ó Carter E. of Medina, OH finds time to be involved in the college experience, participating on the OSU Crew Team and Tango club. ÒThere still is plenty of time for me to study.Ó
Katie S., industrial diamonds and sousaphones
Katie S. isn't one to toot her own horn, but on autumn Saturdays, she does it in a big way! The 4th year MSE major is a member of the OSU marching band's sousaphone section, and has her sights set on Autumn 2008, when she will likely be a dotter of the Script Ohio "i."
Katie has taken full advantage of her time at OSU working as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant in the Fundamentals of Engineering Honors program, and as an Engineering Ambassador, a recruitment position in the College of Engineering.
Katie has held two internships in the Columbus area with CC Technologies, an underground pipeline consulting company, and with Diamond Innovations, a producer of industrial diamonds, where she worked on carbide failure analysis. This summer Katie traveled to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for her third internship with Quaker Oats, where she worked as a production supervisor, gaining leadership and management skills. Katie will add this knowledge to her MSE specialization in metallurgy and minor in business.
Libby B., rocket nozzles and global service

Libby B. has teamed up with faculty member John Morral in his research on rocket nozzles. Libby has gained experience on various machines including the SEM as she determines the mechanism of erosion on carbon and carbon composite nozzle surfaces. With a specialization in metallurgy, Libby also has interned at the Anna, Ohio, Honda Engine Plant where she perfected her skills in metallography and failure analysis.
When not studying or working, Libby finds time to lead Bible studies in her church. She has spent two summers as a missionary in Virginia Beach, and recently in the former Soviet Union. After graduation Libby wants to work in the energy sector or the government. She also hopes to continue global service as an engineer in an organization such as Engineers Without Borders.
Tyler R., corroding in Germany
Tyler at the Brandenberg Gate, Berlin
MSE senior Tyler R. spent his summer in Germany at Ruhr University Bochum (RUB), doing research on wear and corrosion resistance in steel tooling. The internship was sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service's RISE program (Research Internships in Science and Engineering). Tyler has also held internships in light metals research at Honda R&D Americas Inc.
Back on campus Tyler is active in intramural sports, MSE/TMS Club, and Texnikoi Honorary where he is social chair. This year Tyler plans to join the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization. Tyler hopes to attend graduate school, in either MSE or Business.

Coming to the Materials Science and Engineering department was one of the best choices I could have made, next to choosing Engineering. Materials Science at OSU is a comfortable fit for me. The faculty are world-renowned, and the members of the support staff are insightful and empathetic.
In MSE I've had opportunities to perform research and to hold officer positions in student organizations like the MSE Club and Lambda Psi, a minority engineering honorary. Last summer I did an internship conducting research on materials used to design a bio-suit for Mars exploration.
With a degree in Materials Science and Engineering, I hope to make a strong contribution to society through materials research and development.

Since I was little I knew I wanted to be a doctor. The Biomaterials specialization within the Materials Science and Engineering major will prepare me for medicine, as well as for an engineering career. I recently have become interested in artificial organs and limbs, and tissue engineering. This, of course, goes right along with Materials Science.
During spring quarter of my freshman year, I got an Undergraduate Research Assistant position in one of my professor's labs. I work with nanomaterials and their synthesis at near-ambient conditions. I sometimes don't even see the position as work because it is so much fun.
Even though school work and research take a lot of my time, I play sand and indoor volleyball at least three times a week. My friends and I put together an intramural team that hopefully will dominate our league. MSE at OSU allows me to balance my studies with having fun.

Matt C., MSE and Art History?
The first thing everyone says when they find out I'm a Materials Science/Art History double major is "what a strange combination." Art restoration and conservation draw heavily from both modern materials science techniques and classical art history traditions.

Matt in Lecco, Italy during his summer internship at the Politecnico di Milano. |
I've had opportunities to perform materials research at Drexel University in Philadelphia and an internship at the Politecnico di Milano, where I saw the famous artwork I've learned about in class. I'm currently looking into several art conservation internships and possibly grad school for the same thing.
